Area of Expertise
Lynn Barnes is intrigued by history and with viewing its development through the medium of historic clothing and textiles. Apparel and textiles have always been a form of communication with regard to status, group identity, technological developments, financial investments, geographic location, social policies, demographics, and political affiliation. Extant costume collections and museum exhibits assist with historic interpretation and reveal the artistry of design, construction techniques, production and avenues of distribution. It is common for current designers to evaluate historic costume collections for inspiration and ideas that affect twenty-first century clothing designs. Through historic theater costuming, first person interpretations/presentations, and recreations of historic costumes, Lynn has interacted with historic personalities and how they presented themselves to the public through the use of their costume and dress. It is her hope to inspire students to grasp the significance of historic dress and apply it to their careers. Exposure to the historic costume collection at West Virginia University and other collections at local historical societies will enable students to incorporate history as an aide to understanding current fashion merchandising and design practices.
